When the devout Jews broke from the hellenists and rebelled against the Syrian Greeks in about 168 BC, they hid in caves outside Jerusalem. In one cave, 1000 rebel families took refuge. The Syrian Greek army found the cave, and waited for Shabbat. On Shabbat, they lit a fire at the mouth of the cave. The Jews inside would not defend themselves or even extinguish the fire because it was Shabbat. So they all perished from suffocation.

After that, Mattathias and his family concluded that the Torah was not a suicide pact, and if their loves were at risk they would defend themselves on Shabbat. This gave rise to the principle in rabbinic Judaism that human life takes precedence over the observance of Shabbat and most other commandments.
