Literally am in the Same boat but check out my story.

Put off investing for ages bc too pussy.

When I finally went in I was stupid and went all in on a specialized long short fund in Feb that did great at first that has been down only since April when the mkt went up 20% and is flat now. So I freed up some more cash and bought vgt at literally the top ($124.5) one week ago and watched it fall 10% and now I want to die.

I don’t understand the compound interest thing in a 401k. Aren’t you just investing in an index of stocks that go up? How is that compound interest?

If nothing else there’s a dividend yield that gets reinvested

Anyway if it goes up by 8% 2 years in a row that’s technically compound interest

There are other forms of interest that don’t compound per se such as the interest paid on a Bond iirc.

If you buy 100 dollars worth of SPY today and it goes up 10% a year you have 110 next year. If you put in another hundred you have 210 invested. At the end of year 2 you have 231. You buy in another hundred that's 331. At the end of year 3 you have 364. If you didn't invest at all you'd have 300 which would be worth about 288 after inflation. Would you rather have 364 dollars (worth about 352 after inflation) or 300 dollars. Now add 3 zeros to these numbers. 364,000 or 300,000. In one scenario you made a year's worth of salary of the average person and you beat inflation by a substantial amount. 352k or 288k. The person who didn't invest is really far behind.

In one scenario your investment is compounding as you make gains on your principle and on your gains. It compounds brother. Not doing anything is ttt af.

It's always good to have your core retirement in SPY. You should also have a more aggressive risk sleeve seeing as the market is in a historically significant bull run. Given the chip stock boom you want to own some NVDA AMD INTEL MU SNDK SOXL type shit. You should have an edge account where you go for the moon and then when you make a lot of gains pull out of your risk sleeve and dump it back into SPY for stability.

Yeah definitely. I look at my $100k stock account as my “find MU again PLZ god” account.

My 457 I just max out by July then I can contribute to a 401k which is amazing because my cap is basically $50k a year. 457 I can take out upon retirement with no age.

I have $250k in SPY in the 457 and like $150k in SPY in the 401k but I don’t count it because I can’t touch it until I’m 59 or whatever.

trying to stack like $3m in brokerage acct over the next 3 years so i can be fully financially independent. it's nice to know i can stop working if i want.

i can already leave law if i chose to do that, because our expenses are reasonable and wife and i have like $3m in 401(k)s and IRAs, which over 20 years will turn into like $15m or whatever. it's nice knowing that i could walk away from the profession if i wanted to (oddly, or perhaps fittingly, now that i CAN leave, i enjoy the work way more).

i really don't know. i'm 47 now, and i actually have a lot of fun doing it. the last couple years my book has been around $2m, so i'm interested in trying to grow my book just to see if i can. comp next year is likely gonna be like $800k or more, which is insane to me. (getting to $3m in brokerage acct is obviously a stretch and assumes significant returns,w hich probably isn't realistic but if i got to $1.5m, i could probably retire).

i was thinking of maybe in 3-5 years handing off my book to a junior partner who used to work for me as an associate at BAKER AND HOSTETLER and recently lateraled here, and just telling the firm to pay me like $300-375k and i'll work like 800 hours a year. not sure tho.

i'm also thinking about leaving law entirely by like 53-54 and opening a coffee bar. i worked at one in college and i really liked it. i'd only do this if i had enough to straight up retire, because you have to assume the biz would fail.

There's a lot more to it than luck. SPY has gone up 14x since it's inception in the early 90s. If you had 100k invested on day 1 you'd have 1.4 million thirty years later. In that same time span the dollar has lost two thirds of its value. Now picking winners and losers has an element of luck to it for sure. But if you just buy the market you're betting that America will figure out how to make more money next year than it did this year. And this almost always happens with a high level of degree of certainty. It's been true since the American stock market began it has gone up forever. So yes it's a gamble because short term the market could crash but it always rebounds.

Just put everything in a S&P fund like VOO or FXAIX and forget about it until retirement. If you want to diversify, do 50% VOO 30% VTI and 20% VSUX. These are ETFs covering the S&P, the broader total stock market, and international funds.

Don't ever sell till retirement. Ignore market swings. You lose more money panic selling than leaving the fund alone and accepting the bear markets every now and then.

you could honestly just leave it in that and let it ride, but i think putting money in tech and bitcoin is a smart move. i'm not recommending VOO over SPY or whatever, they;'re the same (although VOO is cheaper)

i have bitcoin, ethereum, and solana. i put maybe $2k into dogecoin for shits and giggles. my investment in solana was like $25-30k.

i have a significant % of my 401k in the bitcoin etf (and a smaller amount in ethereum), but i have never speculated on shitcoins or whatever.

Thanks. My bad it’s not SPY but it’s the fund’s equivalent to SPY. I looked at it side by side and the investments are basically identical (in the pamphlet it has a side by side with SPY). I think the expense ratio is very cheap too I think lower than VOO.

I have $100k in a bunch of different stocks. I’ll give it to you here:

$ONON

$APPL

$INFQ

$SERV

$HBM

$ANET

$RKT

$STN

Apple being my biggest win so far I got it around $110.

I have $50k in BTC too but I bought at $70k when it was dipping so I might be fucked.

i'm a believer in investing in index funds/sector funds over individual stocks, but i have put a significant amount lately into NVDA, MU, PLTR and TSLA. i'm basing this purely on surface-level knowledge but i'd probably not want to be in apple, at least not as a big % of my portfolio. seems like the returns won't be much different from the S&P at this point.

I hit 1m around 40 and that was around Covid and I got scared and went only like 15% equities and missed out on the fast comeback. Then I furked up shit with QQQ covered calls and missed out on 100k profit. Then last year I actually "won" with Orange Man's tariffs and made a huge profit to only ruin it this year betting against the market during Iran War and now my NW is only like 25% above what it was at age 40 (granted I have no work income but still)

If I had just put 80% in equities at 40, half in SPY and half in QQQ I'd have at least 1.6m now (I dont even want to calculate it, it prob cld be closer to 2m)

So dont be retarded like me but it depends how much money u have and if u want to risk it. If I had put shit in chip stocks Id have like 5m now ljl
