historians decided to call him Charles even though people at that time would have called him Karl, which was the old Frankish name that "Charles" evolved from. Say his name: Karl the Great

He should know. All these later kings named "Charles" tried to imply that they were descended from Charlemagne but none of them were named Karl. The king of England isn't named Karl. They could have named him that but chose to name him Charles instead.
