From October 2011 to July 2012, Santos worked as a customer service representative at a call center for Dish Network in College Point, Queens.[48] Like many of his coworkers there, he was from an immigrant family, hired for his second-language skill, handling calls from Portuguese-speaking customers who subscribed to Dish's services offering channels in that language. Those coworkers recall him as having "the gift of gab", good phone skills to deal with perturbed customers in either language he spoke, but also willing to bend the rules of his employment. In his first week he figured out how to game the system to produce lower average call times, a desirable metric; many other employees did this but took much more time to learn how. Santos also on several occasions left the call center during shifts to go clothes shopping at nearby stores. Coworkers wondered why he was working there, for $12 an hour, if as he often claimed his family was extremely wealthy.[49][i]
