Car writers have been laser focused on performance metrics for decades. Convertibles are heavier and have worse chassis stiffness so they're "bad".

Also I think people have slowly figured out that convertibles aren't worth the hassle. A few lovely moments on nice-weather days doesn't make up for the wind, noise, the pain of constantly putting the top up & down, the fragile folding mechanisms, etc.
