I was allowed to withdraw my application to enter Australia and deported once
I refused to let them see my cellphone. Stupid in retrospect - I had nothing on it; but I thought it wouldn't be grounds to deny me entry

fucking gay ass SFO airport tried to refuse to let me fly out because I was going to Burma.
took them 30min and they called 2-3 people before they finally decided to allow me to go. At burma, no problems

Long ago I had an under-the-table summer job in Spain lined up - I flew into England on a red eye and, tired as fuck at Heathrow customs, I accidentally said too much about where in the EU I was planning to go & why.
the guy made me squirm for a while before ultimately letting me in, but it was a very close call

I once tried to drive solo from S. Africa to India in a Jeep Wrangler, but I only had papers for like approximately 70% of the countries
the border agents were doubly pissed off because my stereo was blasting Bruce Springsteen. Even my non-western friend couldn't get me out of that jam

Canada has easily the dumbest and most annoying Customs in the world.
the country has officially decided borders don't exist, so in one corner they will be waving through Syrian terrorists while randomly harassing by rich white people who just want to visit Niagara Falls because they suspect they may have an untaxed sandwich in their purse.

He was pretty officious, honestly. They kept me in a roped off waiting area with an African family of 5 who had basically all their personal possessions with them ( it was at least 30 suitcases). They of course pretended to not understand a word of English.
What saved me was that I had the original work permit in my luggage. The guy didn’t believe me and kept saying I was going to be sent back on the next plane bound for US if it wasn’t in my luggage.
We went to collect my bags and I pulled it out. The firm had made a mistake and had pu my US salary in pounds at a time when the pound was very strong. So it looked like I was making 160 GBP.
When he saw that he was sheepish and asked “Do you mind if I ask what you do for that pay packet?”

Good to know I guess. Unfortunately I have a habit of honest so if they ask me if I had one I'm gonna say yeah
I'm curious as to whether or not they ask about "criminal" convictions, because I'm a bit lucky in that my DUI was in Wisconsin. Technically my DUI was not a misdemeanor or felony, it was just a citation.
I sort of want to drive up to Canada just to see if I can get in. It's about a 5 hour drive each way though so that seems a bit silly

i believe the rule is an act that would be considered a crime if committed in Canada, regardless of what it is back home.
you could put your lawyer skills to work drawing a distinction between what is covered by the Wisconsin and Canadian drunk driving laws

i got turned away in 2023 for a work visa to Hungary (jackson lewis does partnerships with some european firms) because of my HIV+ status.
absolutely embarrassing. they couldn't tell the firm for privacy reasons and luckily the firm never asked.
