oh my goodness yes. on my first ever business trip as a first year associate. I was petrified of spending Valuable Client Money and didn't know any better. it was a DUMP. when I told the partner where I stayed he literally laughed at me. He then did the same after I told him I had walked a mile to the depo instead of paying for a taxi :/

You're not alone. I did stuff like that, too. Stayed in a Motel 6 in Sunnyvale once to save the client money. Never again.

i booked a shitty hostel like hotel in nyc with a shared bathroom in the hallway when i was taking the bar because i was worried the white shoe firm i was joining after law school would balk at the reimbursement. neighbors were throwing a cocaine party making noise all night, police were called. pretty dumb of me.

I always stay in Marriott or Marriott Courtyard now. Sometimes the JW. I get the same product whatever property I visit and I greatly appreciate that it is familiar and they all feel the same.

lol. We had an associate who was too afraid to spend valuable client money on lunch so he’d bring a bag lunch to a multi party deposition where 30+ attorneys would all go get lunch while he sat in empty conference room eating his pb&j and apple. Did this for years before we found out and laughed at him

I know you guys are joking, but it's actually the case that if your firm wants to fire you, they'll scrutinize your expenses

Of course, if they want to push you out, they'll find everything

Might as well enjoy yourself

yes. wouldn't recommend.

near the bottom, but not quite the bottom as far as chains go. better than Motel 6, and way better than America's Best Value Inn, in my experience.

but sometimes you have no options.

Once. Most of the other guests were chronically homeless people that a charity put up there.

They've gone downhill since like the 2000s I think

Some memorable motels when I traveled on a budget: One for $6 in Salt Lake City. It was summer and there was air conditioning, but there was no thermostat. The temp was controlled by pulling down a large trap door over the bed that let in more or less cold air. There was no TV, and if you wanted to make a phone call you had to pay ahead in the office. The Stone Castle Motor Hotel somewhere in Pennsylvania. The carpet was covered in black mold. The swimming pool was the color of the great gray green greasy Limpopo River and there was a Ryan Navion (airplane) parked on the grounds. The El Rancho Rankin in Cincinnati. Each room was furnished differently but garishly. Mine was in fake leopard skin and red velour. The Times Square Motor Hotel (NYC actually in Times Square). It was $10.75 in 1970 and came complete with junkies in the lobby. It has a Wiki page. In the PHS we got $25 to cover food and lodging and we could keep what we didn't spend, tax free, so there was an incentive to stay cheap and double up in room. We had a communal internal book listing flea bag motels, mostly under $6, though that was hard to do in big cities. Fun days. I was young and didn't give a shit about amenities or comfort.
