Libs deeply convinced cons want to govern their bodies and their sexuality and oppress them based on ethnicity and ideology, etc etc
Cons deeply convinced libs hate them for their beliefs, their geography, their race and sex, and intend to oppress them.
Not a "history" guy, but it seems like the same motivations felt in the colonies about British imperial rule, i.e. "these people live far away, are not like me, look down on me, and yet want to rule my ass."
So the fundamental posture of the American system began as distrust of government, distrust of systems of power, a kind of hostile skepticism - which is still technically enshrined in our institutions.
And yet, our government and institutions are 1000000x more powerful and intrusive than imperial Britain ever was.
Itd be cool to watch a good docu on the Revolution to explore these parallels and tensions. As I understand it, Burns is just talking about the sanctity of Indians and blacks as the hidden figures of american exceptionalism |
