summercamp makes me think of a day camp. sleepaway indicates the kids are staying there, not just going for the day.

Because, much like the 1983 horror movie, the camp in this story involves multiple juvenile casualties.

A lot of this is regional. In the North East, it's really common to send kids away at a camp they stay at for the entire summer. Outside of the North East, this is way less common. There are also a lot of day camps that run for the same periods, but kids return home each night. Hence the difference between sleep away camp and "camp" or "day camp."

it's also age-dependent. nobody is sending 1st graders to sleepaway camp the entire summer. a 1st grader obv goes to day camp.

camp is such a generic term that it could mean a sleepaway camp for high school kids for the entire summer, or it could mean some 1st grade stem day camp. there's no harm in being more descriptive.
