Origin of Symmetry 8/10 - I love Bliss, New Born, Citizen Erased, Feeling Good, Plug In Baby, Micro Cuts. Really unique, original record. Absolution - incredible record 9/10 even though I prefer OOS more. Time is Running Out, Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Sing for Absolution, Blackout, Stockholm Syndrome, Apocalypse Please. So many bangers. Black Holes and Revelations 10/10 record front to back. Only 1-2 weak songs mostly all bangers. And upon second glacne I see the thread title is like "90s-2010 alternative". But I read it as 1990-2000, and I think most people associate "alternative rock" with that decade. So loving Limp Bizkit and not really knowing Janes was just a huge tell that he came of age when he did, and 99% of the bands named above he would not really know, or would google in the moment. Nothing *wrong* with being whatever age you are. I would have to google 70s bands, or would write things like "Yeah I know one T. Rex song". But Janes Addiction is emblematic because they spearheaded the Gen-X "alternative" moment for a few years, not least through Lollapalooza drawing connecting points between shoegazers, greasy haired grungers, rappers, etc etc. Not to mention birthing other momentous things like Lilith Fair, assorted hippie festivals, re-booting Woodstock, etc. I wouldnt begrudge anyone hating Janes, even tho I like 3 of their albums a lot. But they must be confronted one way or another if youre writing about 90s alternative rock. So seeing them get only a slight nod and mention of their only radio song just told me that OP came of age much later. And tbf, old af people like me hated Limp Bizkit and Korn and such. I would say they're somehow both properly rated and overrated at the same time. They started off as a popular boy band that got really famous for looking cool and being from New York. He was one of the most creative people who ever lived. He didn't just write songs he created a whole universe. He didn't just make art he lived it. I don't think he ever wrote a single song in a major key. He may have written the most negative hits of anyone in history. His entire discography is a downer and I don't think people bring that up enough. It's extremely unusual to almost never write a song in a major key and I can't think of another artist who did. In Bloom is almost in a major key but it's not, really. Kurt had the most negative energy of any star ever. And he wrote so many hits it's insane. Almost all of his songs are famous classics. What more can be said about him? He was a very weird guy and his death launched him to another level of infamy. He wasn't playing the same game as the rest of humanity. Pixies were great they were the first band to write pop songs with a grunge theme. They will always be the first movers in grunge pop. But in the long run they weren't incredible songwriters. They should be in the rock hall of fame and it's stupid that they're not. Pearl Jam is one of the greatest bands ever to write almost entirely in 1 4 5 progressions. Nearly all of their songs recycle the same chords over and over again. They were brilliant tunesmiths and deserve a lot of credit. But they also took the grunge sound and turned it into really cheesy pop music. They are sort of like The Eagles or something. I personally can listen to it but would often prefer not to. It's a song that when lesser bands (Image Dragons) play at their show it's the best part of the show. That being said most of the rest of their stuff was twee and not very good. If you listen to their other hits they're not very good. Beetlebum, Park Life, Girls and Boys.. These songs kind of suck. They were primarily super famous for being young and good looking in the UK at the start of the Britpop craze of the 90s. They were a boy band and not very talented. I think Damon redeemed himself with Gorillaz though and showed he could truly write well when pressed. In some ways he surpassed Graham and the gang. Bottom line Oasis mogged the shit out of Blur. One thing a lot of people don't realize is some bands get really huge just because the members are really attractive. And it skews history and people's memories. Being Hot is a huge advantage. So when you say how good was Blur do you mean how hot were they on magazine covers in the 90s? Very. But their music was mostly pretty bad.
