Yes. 8 payments left on a Nissan Altima. Payment is $678.57/mo. Bought it in April 2023 and financed because the dealership was offering 0.0% apr for 36-months and VMFXX was paying over 5%. Yes, financing was baked into cost of the car and yes I could have done better paying in cash, but I was trying to conserve cash to buy a house at the time. We’ve lost about 16% on the house thus far (~$100k).

Yes I am terrible with money, but also, in some ways money seems fake at this point too. I mean if you want to do things in life you have to spend money and it may not always be the optimal time but you do what you can with what you got and you pick yourself up and go back to work in the morning.

Net worth: About $2.2M

Total spent on car payments in my lifetime: $0

I only buy shitty used cars and drive them into the ground. No point in spending more money than necessary on a rapidly depreciating asset. Maybe I will buy a nicer car some day when I feel like I have maed it, but until then, I would rather save more money so that I can quit wagecucking sooner.

i think that's great. to have a healthy sex life like that.

4 years ago when she was diagnosed was a bad time. she is on medication and has been mostly stable for the last couple of years.

stage 4 means the cancer has spread from the original part to a different part of the body. this is considered incurable. but the doctors will try to elongate life as much as possible.

my poasting during my substance abuse spiral is very well known here and i wronged my wife many times. we got back together in 2022 and i was kinda rocky at first, but it's very good now. we've been together since 2005 and in the last couple months it's all come back to me how in love we were when we first got togehter, and i feel like that again. plus she still looks about the same, which is cool.

yes. about 35k

if you're you buy a new car and there's an incentive below market rate it's kinda stupid not to. even ordinary rates. if you can cop 6% and invest what you would have paid for it into the market earning a conservative avg 10-12% per annum, why wouldn't you?

I'm not sure about that one. Paying cash for a car rather than taking out a loan at 6% effectively gives you a 6% risk-free return on your money. The long-run average for the stock market is higher than 6%, but it is far from risk free. There have been many 10-year and even 20-year periods where the stock market earned less than 6%. Most financial advisors will tell you to pay down debt rather than investing if the interest rate on the debt is 6-7% (or higher). It's usually not worth the slightly higher return for much greater risk unless you will definitely keep your money invested for a very long time.

Of course, if the car loan is 0% or 1%, you take the loan every single time. I would definitely take the loan if the interest rate is below 5%. But it gets a little more questionable for higher interest rates.

what does it matter if the asset is appreciating or depreciating? all that matters is if the rate is good and whether you want additional leverage to invest money. typically on a secured loan, often with financing incentives for the sale, it will be.

Because most people want their assets to appreciate, especially if they're paying interest for a significant portion of that asset's life.

Outlay for a car shouldn't be significant from an investment perspective relative to your income or financial holdings. If it is, you're allocating way too much to vehicles. (Which is, of course, exactly what people selling cars want.)

everyone wants their assests to appreciate nigger, who the fuck wants them to go down? this doesn't explain why you would want to take a loan out for an appreciating versus depreciating.

your second paragraph is completely nonresponsive. of course it's a minor consideration for people buying cars within their means.

it doesn't fucking matter what you're borrowing money *for* for personal use. what matters is the terms of the loans. if i have $100k and am buying an appreciating asset for $50k and depreciating one for $50k, and i want to finance one so i have $50k to invest, then it doesn't matter which one i finance all things being equal. if anything, you'd prefer to finance the depreciating asset because the lenders secured interest is decreasing. if you ran into trouble you'd rather the bank have a lien on something that had decreased in value.

dumbfuck.

On a related note, a friend of mine is in the process of moving from MFH to Westchester and tried to buy a car recently from a dealership. They wouldn't sell him the car he wanted unless he took out a loan with them. (Technically, they never said "NO" -- they just made him go through so many hoops that he gave up).
