I knelt down beside my son and looked him in the eye. "Where did you hear that word?"
"In this old book," he said.
I sighed. "It's a pilot who would fly higher than the sky, who might even go to the moon."
"Wow," he breathed. "Does America have astronauts?"
I felt the hot sting of tears brimming in my eyes, and I blinked repeatedly. "No, not anymore."
He looked confused. "Does Russia?"
I nodded.
"And does China?"
I swallowed hard, feeling the lump in my throat, and nodded again.
"So why don't we?"
"Well, a man named Barack Obama didn't think it was important."
He stared at me for a minute. "It's okay, I'll live here with you forever--who needs to go to space?"

What we should really hope for is that the Russians or Chinese land on the moon sometime this decade, at the site of the Apollo 11 landing. They walk over to American flag, planted by Armstrong in '69, fold it up, and replace it with their own. All broadcast live for the national audience.
We'd be back on the moon within five years and have a manned mission to mars within the decade.

On January 14, 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush announced the Orion spacecraft, known then as the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), as part of the Vision for Space Exploration:
“ Our second goal is to develop and test a new spacecraft, the Crew Exploration Vehicle, by 2008, and to conduct the first manned mission no later than 2014. The Crew Exploration Vehicle will be capable of ferrying astronauts and scientists to the Space Station after the shuttle is retired. But the main purpose of this spacecraft will be to carry astronauts beyond our orbit to other worlds. This will be the first spacecraft of its kind since the Apollo Command Module.

Here is the hidden subtlety of this poast: The Dad was holding back tears because he grew up loving America. Idolizing the brave men (and few women, lol) that gave their lives for this country. But, as a white man, he is brow beaten by the current country he lives in and doesn't love it as much anymore. The son doesn't love this country because he grew up in a country that hates him.
So when he says that he will just stay with Daddy, the son is showing that he loves his dad more than his country. And the dad realizes, in that moment, that his country doesn't matter anymore and that his son and family are all that are important.
