Steinbeck had an agenda. So did Dorothea Lange. Read that shit in High School and only later realized that these two were communist agitators.

It's great

Although I usually don't read that much but I was traveling for Easter so I had a lot of airport/airplane time to just crank through books

Also I read short stories way more than I read novels (the other two books were short story collections) so even if the books end up around similar length it's 'easier' somehow to get through a book in one sitting if it's actually not just one long story

East of Eden is a classic and it's odd to me that it's usually not mentioned as Steinbeck's top work.

cannery row is pretty good too, it's less didactic than Grapes of Wrath or Mice & Men; although (maybe as a result) it suffers somewhat from not really having a "point".

I thought the pearl sucked.

Log from the Sea of cortez *really* sucked.

I've never heard anyone with anything good to say about The Pearl

Grapes of Wrath is didactic as hell but Steinbeck's a strong enough writer that it's still good (kind of like Dickens); the bit where he talks about all the human effort that goes into creating modern agriculture and bumper crops that then have to be destroyed because they aren't profitable is a more eloquent argument for Marxist economic thought than any number of DSA freaks

I haven't read The Perl since I was really young but the concept seems underwhelming even for a short novel/novella whatever that thing is. Grapes of Wrath is good, but the didactic machinery is too central. The intercalary chapters especially its like the book is announcing itself that its about suffering, even though they are great set-pieces. East of Eden is the best novel of his and its not even close imo. It can be a bit digressive and extra at times but it somehow still holds together.

The used car lot and roadside diner bits are some of my favorites (also the xo box turtle and the Marxist “capitalism hamstrings its own productive capacity” chapter)

i remember reading this book at 13 or 14 and being both shocked & enthralled at the scene describing a preacher giving his wife a "fearful pounding" - I think that's an actual quote - after delivering a particularly rousing sermon.

Yeah that's Jim Casy. His entire arc is about the inseparability of spiritual ecstasy and carnal energy. His whole "maybe the Holy Spirit is just people, all of us together" speech is essentially him working out a pantheist framework that dissolves the sacred/profane distinction that made him feel guilty. The "fearful pounding" bit is line is quietly hilarious the way its delivered. King James biblical cadence applied to pussy pounding.

Casy pounding his wife after the sermon is more theologically complex than half the explicit argument in the book though IMHO
