Finished another brutal late shift. Locked up, stepped into the cold, and started walking to my car. Out of nowhere, a can of soda hit me square in the back. Heard laughter—two kids, barely teenagers, hanging out by the cart corral.
One of them yelled, “Nice aim!” as I turned around. I could’ve said something, could’ve yelled back, but I didn’t. Just stared at them for a moment before turning back and unlocking my car.
Sat there in silence for a while, sticky soda dripping down my coat. Started the engine, looked at my reflection in the rearview mirror, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.”
