although i was referring more to the attitude towards locals, which happens when theres a critical mass of transplants. places like austin, nashville, asheville, etc are worse because of the dilution, but at least being a local is seen as cool for the most part. whereas theres something extremely arrogant about moving somewhere and judging the people already there. you fucking moved there! this attitude seems to align with insufferable shitlib sensibilities overall. |

I remember one of the really big articles discussed on XO in the past five years or so it was about New Yorkers movie to western NC and how it was growing the economy but the one thing that pissed the locals off the most is that the outsiders always scoffed at their religion and mocked churches on every street..
I feel like there are transplants and then there are transplants. If you move to New York from say Poughkeepsie it's like OK maybe you're not from the city but you're from the same state and have a similar culture. If you move to Asheville from NY it's a lot more disruptive. If you move here from Gujarat, even more so. I think distance and culture matters. No one would say NYC was ruined by some guy from Ohio. |

what's interesting is that unlike people moving from gujerat, the people moving to san francisco come from everywhere but are attracted like moths to a flame because of shitlib woke shit. i think they hate on the few remaining natives because it was pretty ordinary america back in the day. they see the locals are foreigners, and they're somewhat right about that sentiment. the locals are a vestige of what sf used to be, not what it is now. |

Like yeah there were always a ton of gays and the Grateful Dead were doing acid tests and what have you. But before the tech boom there were a great many normal people. The entire history of the city was wiped out by gentrification. I think that's the biggest problem. Tech made it like Year Zero. You watch a movie like Zodiac and everyone is just a regular cop or a beat writer or a plumber, a regular Joe. And the city had this whole history going back to the 19th century. And that's all gone. You remove a people and you remove a culture, you remove a history. Now it's all half Asian test tube baby ice skaters in Waymos doing loop de loops. It's like when the Arabs finally conquered Egypt and were like wtf are these giant triangles someone made. You lose everything when you lose the people who made a place. Broad strokes this is why I buy into Great Replacement Theory. Like OK cool eventually everyone will be brown. But for the people who matter, it’s far more career/striver-oriented (followed closely by “it’s pretty”). It’s more that the people coming here are all from different cultures who have nothing to do with each other, much less SF or SJ. They are here to earn money and leave but end up having kids who have nothing to do with India / China / Eastern Europe and get into the US education and friend system and want to stay, so they often do. |
