agreed but GTA 3 was on the same level of "whoa holy shit." just in a somewhat different way because they were different types of games
GTA 3 was unbelievable. i remember me and my friends gathered around the TV on the day it came out and being completely blown away. there had never been anything like it. i can't even describe it with words, you just Had To Be There

it was unreal man
a 3-D sandbox world where you could literally go around in a city and smash and shoot things, steal cars, drive around wherever you wanted, kill people, break laws, interact with the environment. for a teenage boy it was truly mind-blowing, unironically
just totally revolutionary and completely categorically unlike and above anything that came before it
world of warcraft didnt come out for several years after GTA 3 btw. and WoW was probably the next Step Change advancement in "holy shit, this is literally an interactive 3-D virtual world that you can Just Do Things in"

i felt the same way when i played The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, they had so many mechanics for interesting two player game play
made me imagine all of the things other games would implement, yet nothing ever came

there are like 4 snes games
there are also a few on the nes and its crazy because they play just like the snes ones, they had so many mechanics and polish that just did not exist at all on nes games but they never get any accolades for what they did
as a side not i really didnt enjoy the n64 versions

i preordered the N64. it came out just after i started college.
playing mario64 for the first time really was an insane, almost surreal, experience. i couldn't stop playing it and couldn't get over that videogaming had gotten to this point with graphics. goldeneye 007 and the zelda games (particularly OOT) were also really mind-blowing and incredible.
even though the graphics today are lightyears ahead of the n64, i have yet to be as impressed or amazed by a videogame experience as i was when the n64 came out. i guess it was the leap into true 3-D gaming that made it feel like a truly revolutionary development.

3 months later they were getting accused of having No Games. Couldn’t make this shit up.
Howard Lincoln successfully convinced the SDNY that donkey Kong didn’t infringe on king kong’s IP but he couldn’t convince the gaming press that Mario 64/pilotwings/Mario kart/Star Fox 64/blast corps/goldeneye could hold a candle to Jet Moto, FF7, Resident Evil 2, and Wipeout.

Too many GameCube games have better versions on N64. Not just worse for their time. Full-on Worse:
Wave Race
Animal Forest
Zelda
Mario
Star Fox
James Bond
If you were like 3 in 2001 you experienced it differently. The gaming public in 2001-2005 was like wow this sucks. Gamecube was marked down to $75.
Trot out the western Reprieve all you want. Metroid was just their way of being like “hey guys it’s T-rated. FPV. 9.75/10.” 33/40 from Famitsu btw.

Star Fox also for some reason and pilot wings
Actually now that I think of it playing NBA2k and NFL2k on Dreamcast first time seriously blew me tf away
