Never given a lot of thought to tariffs one way or the other, but part of me is happy just to see this guy do *anything* that will bring in more money instead of just adding debt.

I understand what he’s trying to do, but it really highlights just how out of touch and deranged from reality boomers are. Domestic manufacturing is great and all but it’s going to be automated and that much faster if companies can’t offshore their Scumwork.

He might be posturing but what for? Probably just pay for play. Good time to invest in Elon and Trump ventures for sure

A 60% tariff on Chinese imports and a 20% tariff on other foreign imports will bring in about a trillion of revenue, based on 2023 numbers

No? I multiplied Chinese imports by 60% and other imports by 20% and summed those products

Really?

Is it smart or dumb to assume these goods have perfectly inelastic demand? In other words, why the fuck would you assume people would buy the same volume of goods despite higher prices?

I promise the tarrifs generate less than whatever you're calculating

Do you not know how tariffs work? The foreign exporting country pays them. Trump specifically addressed this.

I genuinely can't tell if you're fucking with me. Citing Donald Trump for where you learned this makes it hard to tell

Tarrifs can impact the seller's margins and/or the market price. This is mainly driven by the availability of substitutes and other marker dynamics. How the fuck would tarrifs actually protect domestic goods if they didn't impact prices one way or another?
