Transmission links, routing, header checking,etc. It all has to be fast. In addition to Akamai, proliferation of fiber has helped a lot, not because of speed, but because of bandwidth and ability to multiplex a lot of traffic. If congestion develops buffering slows things down a lot.
If you want a real trip, try doing stuff on a geostationary satellite link. Takes forever with near 1 second ping times. |
