I have older female relatives who eat all this up, attend the protests, and try to give odd, out-of-character civics lessons to my kids about Democracy and the Constitution.
It's odd. I don't think that Mom even knew what party the President was in before the NPR podcast app showed up in the 2010s.

counterpoint: the united states attacking iran is way, way dumber. there SHOULD be americans expressing their disapproval in the streets.
meanwhile, as an introvert, i monitor the situation from indoors, and post

you can't have it both ways. the reason the overton window moved is because previous norms were ignored.
look, i wish we sat down and with decorum and good faith debate did what the people wanted. sadly, these things are used to entrench the status quo and prevent progress. no different than how lawyers use procedural tactics to avoid the merits of a dispute being fairly resolved.
the ultimate form of norm-breaking is war, and im sure you'd qgree that has been necessary at times. yeah, boston patriots provoked, lied, and even physically attack the brithish unfairly. but sam adams on american hero rather than an obscure treasonist because it worked.
im not venerating trump this way, only pointing out that the moral weight a norm-breaker bares depends on how successful they wind up. i dont think trump will go down as abe lincoln, but abe lincoln wouldnt have happened without a jacksonian period of civil strife leading up to big changes

appreciate your reply.
i don't think this part is true
"you can't have it both ways. the reason the overton window moved is because previous norms were ignored."
trump was elected twice on the strength of "let's enforce immigration rules" and "no foreign wars." he absolutely had the mandate to push through real change. instead, he'd rather do photo opps, and lawlessly flaunt anti-immigrant power.
edit: ok i totally agree that doing all sorts of lawless stuff ALSO shifted the overton window, but i don't think that ultimately does anything good for the country - bad precedent. but now i think we agree on the technical point
-
agree with your second bit, that history will judge the rulebreaker by ultimate results (and that history is written by the victors). we'll see what unfolds...

im not really talking about trump specifically. theres a lot you can criticize him about. but the norm breakers are always going to be imperfect and boisterous.
on immigration specifically: nothing ever would have changed if reasonable faggots like us led the way. the establishments of both parties supported illegal immigration, and all the debates and policies surrounding it was rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. for the public to be snapped into coherence sometimes it takes a brash retard who is also a truthsayer for the most part. we have the luxury to clutch our pearls about his excesses, but with romney types ever going to get ice on the streets?
and let's say trump made good on his commitment to no foreign wars. when i voted for him lots of people were clutching their pearls about decorum and norm breaking and reminiscing about mccain talking about how decent of a person obama was during the campaign. wow, that's great, but would you take niceties and decorum when it's facilitating sending our kids to die overseas? or is it better to have a guy who is rough around the edges but calls out that bullshit for what it is?
im not defending trump specifically. but these change agents are always imperfect. that's what i mean about a sledgehammer. when big changes happen the transition is messy. from ceasar to robespierre to lincoln. when changed happen it's messy. the reluctance to endure that cost is a good thing because we dont want to make big changes willy-nilly.
"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed"
and i know that im being repetitive but i want to emphasize that im talking about the concept of how an omelet cannot be made without breaking eggs. this happens in big and small ways, and often more eggs are broke than necessary. im using historic examples to make my point, not saying trump is an equivalent to then.

Just admit that you're a racist piece of shit who enjoys the cruelty of the GOP.

No Kings:
No one is above the law.
Also No Kings:
Sanctuary cities that ignore federal immigration law, defund ICE and the police, and release repeat rapists, pedophiles, and murderers back onto our streets.
