In the book, Godric is a 2000-year-old child-molesting, child killing vampire who commits suicide to repent, realizing that the Fellowship of the Sun may have been right all along as to the true nature of vampires. But since Alan Ball's primary goal is to promote homosexuality rather than do a good show, he conveniently omitted Godric's background so that his suicide really doesn't make sense.

In the book, are there any other vampires out there older and more powerful than Godric was?

Not sure, I haven't actually read the book. But I would assume that some of the vampire kings/queens are.
