What do partners/older associates think of people who come in out of law school, pay off loans quickly, and leave as soon as possible? Do they take this shit personally, like when the associate is all like oh hey btw I got this other offer I'm leaving in a month.

why do you care about what they think? unless you want to come back to biglaw, it shouldn't matter.

btw, most associates leave biglaw within a few years, for a variety of reasons. i don't think most partners spend sleepless nights searching for those reasons tho.

if you give them sufficient notice, do good work until you leave and don't otherwise burn your bridges, i think most non-aspies would understand. in fact, if you do all that and you are a quality lawyer, they would prob even consider taking you back at some point in the future.

Not surprisingly, different people view this differently. Keep in mind that attrition is built into the system, so they expect most people to leave in a few years to do other shit. Of course, the problem is when their star associate is the one who leaves. Then they're annoyed.

this is sometimes mitigated by the star senior associate going to a major client if that person then funnels work back to the firm

They think of it as just business. If the "other offer" is with a client they'll see it as a compliment to your work.

Man hell no.

I still talk to some people every now and again at my biglaw firm. No one gives a shit if you leave. You're expected to; the only question is when.

I caught a little bit of shit b/c I left too early for the firm to recoup costs spent on me. But no one gave a shit really. At all.

I left in a year and a half. I would've left sooner if i had another job lined up. I transitioned right into a position as a gov't atty once I got the offer. Been doing that ever since.

Way to go man that's kinda my strategy. Did you go to gov't work that had to do with what you were doing in biglaw or was it unrelated?

What i did in biglaw is totally totally different than what i do now. Many biglaw firms have the topic i work with now, but i'm never, ever going back.

Nah don't be jealous. Biglaw money is really good. You will defintiely miss that once you leave.

My hours vary. In a tough week I might work 50 hours. In a slow week I might work 30. I can telework if I want to which is nice.

-I had a ton of connections at the agency i went to work for.

-I worked very very hard on my resume and the application.

-Some luck.

Some gov't jobs are not all that hot. OGC offices are the best positions IMO. Atty Advisor positions are ok, but don't give you good experience from what I've been told.

Jesus. 50 is the bare minimum for me.

As for money - it's mainly going to debt anyway. Also I have zero time to enjoy the fruits of my money.

How'd you get that job. Can you elaborate at all on your particular position?

My biglaw money went to debt too. alot of my current salary goes to debt, just a lot less than before.

See above for how i got the job. it has its ups, but definitely downs.

My position: I work in an Office of General Counsel position. Soon, I'll be leaving this position for a policy advisor type of position because i just want to do something else.

I'm sorry i can't elaborate too much. i do not want to be outted.

Good for you. I have a few questions, if you don't mind...

Why do you say that OGC jobs are better? What is the difference between an OGC job and other federal government positions?

Do federal government jobs (other than DOJ) drug test?

For someone interested in eventually transitioning back to a law firm, are there any federal attorney jobs that are transactional?

The biglaw model depends on heavy attrition. Most people at the firm will not take it personally when you leave, indeed, the partners will be happy to have increased leverage. They will probably barely notice. Although biglaw attorneys are often made to believe they are indispensable, this is mostly a trick to milk long hours out of them.

At most big firms there are so many associates coming in and out that no partner is really going to give a shit about decreased leverage when associates lave.
