There seems to be a decent-sized minority of people who prefer handwriting to typing. I am not among this group, so can't tell you much about their motivations. Someone once justified this to me on grounds of paranoia about data loss or other computer meltdowns. I think I also heard someone else say it allows them to focus more and forces them to think through the answer before they begin writing.

If you've got average typing and writing speeds, typing allows you to write much, much more. I really think that gives typers a strong advantage.

I handwrote (and passed) for pretty much the same reasons. It wasn't a big deal. The trick is to bring erasable pens to the exam. Without them I would have been screwed many times over.

I had heard too many horror stories about the crappy test taking software the state bar associations make you install to go through with using a computer. Plus, I refused to pay over $100 for such POS one-time use software.

in my jurisdiction, the default is to hand write and if you want to type you have to fill out a form and send it in a couple weeks before the exam

surprisingly, few people actually do it

I handwrote because as mentioned earlier I didn't want to worry about a computer glitch wiping out my work, or some other mixup. I finished each portion of the exam with 1+ hours of spare time and easily passed.
