they're mistaking a 3-point win in a special election in Mitt Romney's state to somehow mean that they can do no wrong.
but they currently have an 18-seat deficit in the Senate and a 70-something one in the House.
The Republicans are insanely unpopular with the American people right now (especially the younger ones), and as long as they choose to keep people like Palin out there as the face of their party, it's going to be decades before they regain control of anything significant in the federal government. |

Most senior Republicans want Palin to go away. No one "chose" to make her face of the party. She is the leader of a significant bloc of the party, hate it or love it. |

I think you can look at the math of the GOP primary--basically fundamentalist xians / social conservatives compose more than half of it--and say that it's not impossible. But as I outlined in my post, there are a ton of x-factors, not least of which, the GOP brain trust will try to prevent it from happening. |

It depends on the field. The votes exist for her to win the Republican primary IF evangelicals blockvote for her.
Will they?
With Huckabee out due to his Dukakis episode, the GOP needs to find another strong religious social conservative to split the vote with her.
If I'm Sarah Palin, I want the field to be Romney, Pawlenty, and Palin. Romney and Pawlenty split the moderate vote and Palin walks away with the nomination.
If I'm the GOP, I want Gary Bauer and Alan Keyes to draw sharp contrasts with Sarah Palin and essentially call her untrustworthy and not a real social conservative and for Romney or Pawlenty to get knocked out early so that they don't split the vote.
But, as a Democrat, I'll say that our true enemy has yet to show himself. |
