i do think jesus of nazareth was a rabbi who lived circa 3AD and preached of a coming kingdom of god; whether he wanted to establish an entirely new religion apart from judaism is unknown to me. Paul of Tarsus is the one who traveled around spreading it to the non jewish world. Im not sure the historical jesus actually interacted to any extent with gentiles during his life.

It's not an easy answer for me. The same rational skepticism that immediately discounts it has to deal with the existence of the texts.

The most rational accounting for the texts suggests that the miracle stories originated as early as anything about Jesus, and were almost definitely contemporary with his life. Those most likely to debunk miracle stories and with ultimate incentive to deny them -- actual eye witnesses -- instead suffered and died claiming they were true, often *because* they claimed they were true.

(This is not accurate for all the miracle stories, but even if it accurate for one, the point holds).

I acknowledge that IF such a miracle happened, it does violence to everything else I think I know about the world. It's easier for me to think they are false.

yes, being a christian, rather than a madman, virtually requires that it's difficult to believe. that's, as it were, the point

im not a fan of this way of thinking, where God puts up an obstacle course to belief. It would be one thing if the obstacle course rewarded strength or intelligence... but in this rendering it rewards acquiescence or even dumbness

Seems arrogant to think something needs your belief in order to exist.

Your powers of comprehension are finite.

Sure, God created the concepts of time, matter, energy, and volume, crafted the atom and electromagnetic spectrum, set up self-replicating DNA, gave life to otherwise dead matter, and set up the universe to act in amazing harmony...but Jesus briefly being supported by a liquid? Come on...
