Still, Martin is promising his fans a tad quicker finish to the sixth and penultimate book in the series, "The Winds of Winter." He says he already has 200 pages written and hopes to have it finished in two, maybe three years.

http://m.ctv.ca/topstories/20120312/george-martin-game-of-thrones-120313.html

also, apparently after the series is over he's going to make some spinoff series based in westeros. wtf is that about, bros?

how much could he exploit his stranglehold on that franchise?

like if he demanded that "five comely young males" arrive at his house to suck him off every weekend or else he'll stop writing, would that basically happen automatically?

I remain convinced that he has it all written, and after the show runs its course, he will release the final books, which will depart significantly from the story told in the shows, thus driving up the sales of his last couple books.

The screenwriting was utter shit last season and it hasn't gotten better. Only good dialogue last night was with the hound, and even that was weaker than typical hound dialogue. The scene with Euron in particular was hammy as fuck, as was danaerys prancing around with her little footstool.

Agreed. I don't know if prior seasons were better because they were working off of and were somewhat constrained by source material written by GRRM or if it was simply having source material largely predating the horrible culture of this decade, but the writing, which was never spectacular, has declined noticeably.

Sansa was basically reading a Reddit thread out loud last night.

"Father was stupid and he died. Robb was stupid and he died. You need to be smarter."

Like most women, Sansa was correct with her identification of the underlying problem, but her understanding of the problem was superficial at best and he solution would only make things worse. I don't know if this was intentional (I would like to think it was, but I don't have much faith in the writers at this point), but Sansa's exchanges with John practically mirrored the exchange between Sirsi and Jamie. In both instances, the males demonstrated an understanding of the situations that was far more nuanced and complete than that of their female counterparts. I am hopeful this means the story will progress with Jamie and John soon joining forces in a way that is akin to that of Ned and Robert.

I thought they had the source material AND GRRM was helping them with the writing. Not sure if he's still participating, but it seemed like a solid 2/3 of the dialogue last night was pure exposition, written in very plain language like you'd use to ELI5.

Jaime is a smart dood, why is he going along with Cersei as queen? I mean any other option, for him, would be better. Is it because she is his last family (Tyrion being written off). I guess I expected him to try to press harder on why being queen is a really bad idea.

In the books he has pretty much given up on Cersei right? Been a while since I read. And he was committed to making things right in the Riverlands where Lannister men had basically fucked it over.

Yeah. He realized she was an insane bitch in the books. He basically had a full awakening to the truth of everything and we looked at the world through his lens a good amount of the time whenever he was in a scene in the book. On the show he's just some prop in most scenes.

Sounds like winds of winter is done and will be out before the end of the year. Hopefully getting though that one he set up himself up for the finals and it won't take him too long to do that one but knowing him he'll need 10 more years of swilling Diet Pepsi in which case yeah we're probably never going to see the end of this series.

There's also another possibility we have to contend with: people rapidly lose their creativity as they age. Most of GRRMs best work was actually written and conceived of in his 30s and 40s. The last book sucked dick.
