It's a serious question, what do ppl really like about NYC.
I know people who absolutely LOVE NYC. I have never asked them why because it seems obvious (best city in the world bs) but what exactly do they like?
Is it the "prestige" of living there? Or the fact that there's famous ppl there? Or the skyline? Or the amount of ppl that live there? What is it?

Well for one, when you get millions of weirdos in one place the normal people tend to want out.
Or, to put it another way, if you're just normal Joe that likes to hang out with other normal Joes and watch sports then there are many, many better cities for that where you can live much better an not be surrounded by weirdos. Chicago, for one.

that's a disingenuous over-simplification.
i like hunger/edge/dramatics.
you may deride me if you like, but it's what i enjoy in people, and those who feel similalry actively seek out places like nyc.

"Entropy Index.3 We can think of racial/ethnic diversity in two ways:
1. The number of groups that live in the area.
2. The relative size of each group.
For example, consider two metropolitan areas that each have four racial/ethnic groups.
By the first criteria, they are equally diverse. But if the first metropolitan area is 90
percent of just one racial/ethnic group, while the second metropolitan area’s
population is 25 percent of each group, then by the second criteria the second
metropolitan area is more diverse. It is more diverse because the percentages of each
group are more even. The Entropy Index is designed to measure, in one summary value,
both the number of groups and their evenness.
The standardized Entropy Index measures how close a total population is to sharing
balanced percentages across its racial/ethnic groups. If one subgroup is 100 percent
of the population, then the standardized index score will be 0. If the four racial/ethnic
groups are each 25 percent of the population the score would be one. Houston has
the highest entropy score of the 10 largest metropolitan areas, 0.874. New York is a
close second with a score of 0.872. All but two of the 10 largest metropolitan areas,
Boston and Philadelphia, have a higher entropy score than the national average of
0.709, meaning that in general the large metropolitan areas are more diverse than
the nation as a whole."

did you read your own fucking article, it lists four, and lumps whites all together, and doesn't add up to 100 percent
one has to wonder about the vibrant jewish, or russian, or pakistani etc etc etc community in houston
or maybe they just have 40 percent white southerners, 40 percent mexicans, 16.8 percent blacks, and less than 5 percent other
OH WHAT DIVERSITY

Umm,Jews and Russians are classified as "White", genius, and thus included in these figures. Also, compare Houston vs NYC using the racial classifications used in the study.
Finally, have you ever been to Houston? If you had, you wouldn't be making such ignorant statements of a city that is hugely international, including large Vietnamese, Nigerian, Pakistani, Arab, Venezuelan, etc. groups in addition to every other usual suspect.

exactly, which is to say they are not counted at all for the purposes of "diversity" which is fucking retarded
so houston has, let us repeat this, 40 percent rednecks, 40 percent mexicans, 16.8 percent hispanic, and the rest other, or less than 5 percent
which is exceptionally balanced, but not actually all that diverse
to put a finer point on it, a city with 50 percent white 50 percent black would score a perfect 1 on your scale, yet be staggeringly less diverse than nyc

of course that is unfair
hypo: city one has a million scots irish protestants and a million mexicans, that's a perfect 1
city two has a 1/2 million scots irish, 200k jews, 200k russions, 200k italians, 200k germans, and 200k scandanavians, and 500k mexicans, 200k brazilians etc etc
are they both equally diverse?

do you know what "amor" means? how about "amour"? or "amore"?
there: you know basic words in 3 languages, then, an nobody would flinch if you used one in colloquial English conversation.
"milch" is not different than the use of "zeitgeist" or any other commonly used german word.

You know what its like to live on a college campus?
Where you can walk anywhere, everyone can get drunk as shit and walk or take a cab home, and you barely ever encounter any dumbs?
That's what the pros of NYC are.

As a tourist, I like going to NYC a couple times a year to feel small and lost. NYC just feels like a giant machine.
Grabbing for new things to see every time is sort of like treasure hunting.
Living there, I can't speak to. But most of the people I know who live there love drama, craziness, and being seen/scene.

I like trying out different dives for eating out, the local shops that cater to everything, walking around and people watching.
Some people like driving to strip malls for convenience, etc.
I, personally, find I get more involved with everything I do and everything is more about personal selection, getting unique things within a mile walk or so, etc.
I actually get stimulated by NYC...but I'm not one that likes to relax either. I'm sure it's just a personal preference.
