Unemployed T14 Class of 2012 bro here. I'm looking into possible non-laywer positions, and hear that some of these compliance jobs are JD "preferred." How's the competition for these jobs and how much do they pay?

I don't have any substantive pre-law school work experience. undergraduate STEM major. I have no interest in litigation and hate poors, so shitlaw or public interest is out of the question. I had always wanted to end up in-house, so I thought compliance would also let me work for a corporation, but I'd like to know moar about it.

spent too much time in developing countries to sympathize with the poors of this country. or sympathize enough to be motivated to help them.

What business area are you looking at? I work in the futures and securities-regulatory world, and there are a ton of people with JDs in compliance positions.

From my experience, there are people that went straight into compliance roles at a broker-dealer or futures commission merchant or introducing broker. Their roles would normally be limited to reviewing public communications and/or low-level regulatory inquiries. The difficulty is that you are not considered a "lawyer," but rather compliance. I do know of some people that went from compliance to legal; however, they were at their respective firms for over 10 years. You may likely be required to take additional examinations, Series 3 for futures and/or Series 7 for securities.

You can probably expect starting salaries around the high 5 figures and probably be capped out at a chief compliance officer at around $300K depending on the firm. This is an area that is growing by the way (in response to the Dodd-Frank regulation). I have some friends that work the compliance circuit and even go abroad.

Do you have any particular questions?
