So I got a snowboard for Christmas.

It's 162 cm long and very light, on the fancy side apparently. 162 cm does not come up to my chin - closer to my adam's apple.

Is that long enough - the guy at the store apparently said there are diminishing returns when you are over 6' tall. Its shorter and a LOT lighter than the ones they give me when I am renting.

I am beginner/int level - basically I can go down the hill without falling down, but I feather most of the time. I am trying to learn how to carve properly.

Will my snowboard be fine or do I need a longer/heavier one? I understand the longer and heavier, the faster you go - not sure if that is a good thing or not. Also I want a board that will keep up as a get better.

Thoughts?

How tall/heavy are you? Snowboard length has more to do with the weight of the person than height. Anyways, a 162 should be fine for free riding and most of the things you'd progress towards. You'd want a shorter board if you were going to ride park.

burton? It's *THE* fanciest brand. Like the poster above said, a board that size would be fine for everything though not ideal for park (jumps/rails etc.). But as a beginner, I doubt your goals include that sort of thing at the moment.

Have you tried before? the first day or so is pretty much hell.

yes burton.

shit, that's an expensive present.

I have no interest in flipping around on a rail - but I assume a shorter board is ideal for that.

I want to go down the hill at big bear, mammoth and tahoe and have fun and that's about it.

I've gone either 2 or 3 times last season and got a lot better quickly.

What is the advantage of a super long board like 167 cm? Is it more stable?

Since you're focused on learning how to carve, shorter would actually be easier although a 162 is fine too. You definitely don't want to go longer as it will be harder to carve on cause it's more board you have to swing around.

Plus longer than 162 is pretty much unnecessary unless you're a euro carving faggot.

For a beginner, it doesn't matter. Work on turning and try something gradually steaper every time you go. Wide half slope turns at first and then narrow them.

Also, if you're going to start now you should ski. I'd get it if you were in Jr high, but no reason for a 30 year old to act like a teenager.

What mountains do you go to?

LJL. I've been skiing for over 30 years on all sorts of terrain, get refresher lessons every season and have never injured myself. None of the experts I ski with get injured either. Go on pugski.com and ask around how many people have had knee surgeries or regularly suffer injuries.

The only people I see who regularly get injured are racers or people with really bad form/fundamentals. The only person I know who injured himself skiing was an utter noob who was bombing down a black run and when he inevitably fell, his legs were a-framing and he was in a snowplough so obviously his legs got tangled up.

The very definition of an expert skier is someone who can safely ski in all conditions and on all terrain, not "you have to be able to arc perfect 16 degree turns at 40mph across all terrain." Obviously idiots (other than racers) who get injured are not experts since they were going too fast/hard given the conditions. If you have to sideslip to make it down a 30+ degree pitch littered with rocks, then you sideslip. If you have to ski at 5mph to get past suspected treewells, you slow TF down and take it easy.

I was responding to "skiing = knee injury."

Sometimes you fall, but absent really bad luck, you're getting back up. To get knee injuries, you have to be really pushing the limits in terms of speed (racers or stupid noobs flying down a blue run), skiing with really bad technique, or have really shit luck.

Most people have really bed technique and tend to go too fast for their ability level since they don't know how to pressure their skis to control direction/speed. Most people aren't really fucking unlucky.
