It is grueling work brother. It is not as simple as it seems. Even with our small crop, we had to deal with insects, disease, rodents, and natural disasters. A lot of "what-ifs" involved in farming; however, you can do somethings to limit the disaster caused by disease and rodents.
From the age of 15-18, I would wake up at 5 am to feed the animals, go through the crops to look for rodent holes or disease, and then shower to go to school. Although, the moments I spent with my dad were the most 180 in my life. Especially when we would harvest the crops or kill a pig to eat. Felt like an amazing day watching everyone enjoy our hard work.

"Maybe use pesticides"
If you're trying to go organic, usually the entire business is vastly different from top to bottom. They're not in the same ballpark.

very little chance of being successful. Even the people born into are having a hard time of farming full time anymore. Some city slicker would be absolutely fucked.
Also, enjoy 50 hours of hard labor per week.
