I've never farmed before but it seems pretty straightforward. Just buy some land and drive some tractor thingies over the land at specified intervals. Maybe use irrigation and pesticides and herbicides if that's your thing. Then you hire illegals to harvest the food.

99% of these hippies don't turn a profit and are doing it with mommy and daddy's money. It mostly doesn't even resemble regular farming whatsoever.

I know a guy who runs a biodynamic farm in PA. He makes part of his money buy giving instructional tours to other people who are interested in biodynamic farming. Apparently it's like organic farming except you also do little prayers and magic rituals to help the crops grow.

how expensive do you think eggplants are and how many can you grow and move to market without them rotting?

the truth about farming is a lot of it is really, really, really cyclical, legit bros with hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and decades of experience will have losing seasons on shit

You're either born into it, or you're some unstable city yahoo who decides to give it a go and fails miserably. Overpays for everything and has a mental breakdown.

What do you want to farm? I grew up on a ranch, but we had some crops. My pops and I farmed corn and some squash. Nothing fancy, we would sell it to the local corner store in exchange for store credit. We would use the store credit to buy alfalfa or other feed for our animals.

I can buy 5# of russet potatoes for $1 on sale. there is no value in potatoes unless you are growing heirloom varieties.

It is grueling work brother. It is not as simple as it seems. Even with our small crop, we had to deal with insects, disease, rodents, and natural disasters. A lot of "what-ifs" involved in farming; however, you can do somethings to limit the disaster caused by disease and rodents.

From the age of 15-18, I would wake up at 5 am to feed the animals, go through the crops to look for rodent holes or disease, and then shower to go to school. Although, the moments I spent with my dad were the most 180 in my life. Especially when we would harvest the crops or kill a pig to eat. Felt like an amazing day watching everyone enjoy our hard work.

"Maybe use pesticides"

If you're trying to go organic, usually the entire business is vastly different from top to bottom. They're not in the same ballpark.

My ex was an ARE country farmer's daughter. That shit is hard. I really think you have to be born into the lifestyle. There is just too much shit that you have to have a feel for.

yeah bro, a multi million dollar investment to get the land and equipment necessary to grow any significant amount of crops is a great idea when you have no idea wtf you're doing

very little chance of being successful. Even the people born into are having a hard time of farming full time anymore. Some city slicker would be absolutely fucked.

Also, enjoy 50 hours of hard labor per week.
