What's a good resource for mid-level programming?

Right now i can wow the morons in my office by writing a quick macro to prevent sending an email without an attachment if i used "attached" somewhere in the body or cracking the password on a protected excel spreadsheet, but I have a project that requires manipulating large matrices and I need some good instruction.

I am familiar with matlab and mathematica mostly, took one basic course when I was in like 6th grade but its been ages.
