Thinking about refinancing student loans to 2.75% + libor. Obviously would be awesome now, but afraid I'm gonna variable rate pwn'd. I've read a bunch of shit about rates staying stagnant for a couple years, but lets be realistic. Once they start moving, they've only got one way to go.

thinking about the same thing. plan to have mine paid off in 3 years, and the interest accruing will obviously be front loaded as the balance shrinks so it won't be a huge deal if the rate spikes in year 3. makes the variable rate real tempting. but man if it shot up in 6 months and stayed there i'd be MAF

Basically my plan exactly. I'm gonna pwn these bitches hard for 3 years.

If rates start to jump, I can always refinance into a fixed rate... BUT, I'm worried about whether I'll pull the trigger fast enough and end up getting fucked with a higher rate locked in.

We're basically market timing bro... to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Same. Hopefully, even if rates rise, the time spent destroying principle with low interest rates pays off.

that's what i'm thinking. if rates rise later on, it's the equivalent of making extra payments early on and paying less toward the end - in the long run, i believe that would save payments if you're going balls out at the beginning

i want to know this too. looks like the fed might finally start easing off the easing. how long do we have to lock in a sweet rate?

The lowest fixed rates I've seen are 4.75-5.00%.

I'm talking about variable rates tied to the libor.

seems crazy to think that rates won't raise sometime in the near future unless the economy goes straight into the dumpster

Rates will never materially increase. Fed, state and local governments are too levered to handle higher rates.
