You have to understand that during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, flying was considered a luxury experience, like being on a cruise ship in the sky. This is why planes like Boeing's Stratocruiser had in-flight bars and cocktail lounges (see http://www.ovi.ch/b377/articles/carpet/lounge0.jpg and http://b377.ovi.ch/cutaway/united.jpg ). Over time, airlines refocused their priorities on cramming in as many passengers as possible, so by the mid- to late 1970s flying was more like riding a bus or train.

Pre deregulation they couldn't compete on price and had to compete on service. Consequently flying was egregiously expensive but they'd blow you and wipe your ass. Now it's cheap, widely available and shitty.
