Ummm... Besides the fact that nobody speaks English, it has the 14th highest murder rate in the world (ahead of New Orleans and Detroit and every other U.S. city), and there is still a civil war going on in the country, no, there is no reason at all not to move to Medellin.

Cali is a putrid shithole. It is dirty, ugly, more dangerous than Medellin, and has literally no advantages over even Bogota, Manizales, or Pereira.

Cartagena is ok, but overrun with tourists, oppressively hot, and quite underdeveloped outside of the tourist zones.

CR cities in Colombia are Medellin, Manizales, Pereira/Armenia, and to a much lesser degree, Santa Marta and Bogota.

As I've said repeatedly, you can get that in a Colombian CD. You can secure Colombian residency + access to Colombian investments via an investor's visa, requiring a minimum $30k investment in the country.

The better question is what's the real rate of return on a Colombian CD. I'm sure Turkey has CD's that pay 10% too, but if inflation is high and/or the currency is facing continual depreciation than it's no better than earning .1% in a US account.

I'm moving at the end of this year with $250k liquid in a Bancolombia CD and $3k/month in online income.

The quality of life there is vastly superior ( assuming you're middle class or higher). There is an infectious joy in the culture, the city and topography are gorgeous, and stress levels much lower.

Freelance writing. I make about $400-500/article and right now write about 6-8/month. If I wanted to get off my lazy ass and do it full time, I'd write twice as many and clear about $5-6k. That requires a lot more work, pitching new clients, and not being semi-retired, though. I'll only do that if I need more cash for any reason, but on $2-3k/month in Medellin, you're living an upper-middle class lifestyle and enjoying life.

still too much damn street crime. sure, it's not as bad as it was, but people still get clipped by strays, kidnapped, mugged, etc. at a rate rivaled only by the direst american shitholes like the south side of rahm's shitttcago.

it CAN be a good life, of course, but for long-term relocation i'd want some enhanced protections - armored vehicle, firearms/security guard permit from the government so i can carry weapons legally, and so on.

Here's a 3 bdrm in a comfortable neighborhood w/full amenities for about $525:

This little 1 bdrm in upper-middle class, leafy Laureles rents for about $350/month. You can walk to countless bars, cafes and shops, as well as the Metro.

Or this one for a little under $400/mo:

Nightlife is off the hook. It's one of the best party cities in the Americas.

Dining scene is similar to a hip, mid-sized American city. There are 2-3 restaurants that might be similar or close to single Michelin star quality (Carmen, La Provincia, Mystique, maybe El Cielo), and about ten others that can justifiably be called fine dining, plus lots of good mid-range stuff.

Very nice. I grew up there and much prefer it to Poblado because it's 1)flat, so no climbing up steep hills like Poblado and 2)greener, with more parks, houses, etc interspersed among the bars & restaurants. Also fewer gringos. It's where the "old money" lives in MDE; Poblado is considered a bit flashy.

Poblado is almost exclusively for expats in overpriced condos. They get to pay three-four times as much the privilege of being walking distance to the Hard Rock Café.

While the beaches someplace like The Bahamas or Jamaica are glorious, it's comparing apples to oranges. People retire in MDE because they want a comfortable, modern large city that still has some local charm, is cheap, and culturally vibrant.

If someone is after a beach lifestyle, I'd certainly do Belize or Jamaica.

Sounds like a win - at least for a while. Maybe I'll get bored and do something else in a few years, but for now it sounds like a pleasant lifestyle.

Sup lived in Colombia for about a year all over

Medellin is cr but has extremely sketchy areas. Having it said that it has not flame top 5-6 hottest female population I've ever seen anywhere outside of europe

If 600k you want to post up in Santa Marta/Cartagena area and go bounce back between Cali, nice part or high mountain Medellin and Barranquilla, you'll also want to visit The National Park a lot and see some of the best scuba diving on earth

Bogota is absolutely SPS hell on Earth avoid at all costs

The pussy there is fucking unreal, and if youre a hobbyist you'll probably just end up fucking legit 9s legally for like $30 lmfao

I am considering leaving my gf and moving there part time once I get equity in a project coming up
