I hadnít seen any novel make the statement that entering the workforce was like entering the grave. That from then on, nothing happens and you have to pretend to be interested in your work. And, furthermore, that some people have a sex life and others donít just because some are more attractive than others. I wanted to acknowledge that if people donít have a sex life, itís not for some moral reason, itís just because theyíre ugly. Once youíve said it, it sounds obvious, but I wanted to say it.

he's a much more charming writer than ellis even in translation. ellis' personality is put-on and catty. he writes like the catty gay bitch he is. houellebecq writes with a honest deadpan nihilism that is frequently very affecting, although happy people find him repulsively cold

Maybe. The only other Ellis books I've read are Less than Zero and Glamorama. I liked Less than Zero, but Glamorama was so bad that i never bothered reading any of his other works and just assumed that he peaked with AP.

Houellebecq is weird.

You'll read one of his books and like a half hour will pass without anything remotely interesting happening, then out of nowhere you will get hit with a passage that shakes you to the core.
