And either you knew far more slackers than I did or youre delusional about how much other people study. If you follow barbri's program arent you easily putting in 200+ hours? (I honestly dont know the answer to this, since I just had the books and not the course). I do know the avg for my ls friends was way over 100 though. |

Not slackers at all, just normal bros. 150+ is a fucking ton of studying. Now, if you're just saying 9-5 every day was 'study hours' and grouping all the time together, cool, not that crazy. A lot of people seem to make a full day of study for weeks on end. But 150+ quality hours with your nose in the book is insane overkill for most people. Does the average person really need to put in 10+ hours for wills or admin law or whatever? Even if you waste your time with the lecture that's a shitload. |

Date: July 17th, 2014 11:55 PM Author: harsh aromatic deer antler Failed CA bar the first time. Walking out of test I felt very good. Was relatively shocked when I failed. I failed mbe and essay portions. Took Barbri.
Second time, I said fuck barbri and essentially only used it for essay prep and the mini conviser. I did adaptibar for MBE's and did nothing but work on essay writing, do a shit load of mbe's on adaptibar and work on memorizing mini-conviser.
When test came First two days I felt great. Third day I fucking bombed. I mean completely bombed. One question was torts/contracts/remedies, then had a note somewhere that said assume all torts' contracts issues are resolved. Totally miss that, literally spent 45 mins of an hour writing about torts and contracts. Studied fuck all for remedies since it had been on like 4 exams prior and I had a base understanding. Completely winged it, put the wrong rules with the wrong remedies title. Other essay was conlaw and I knew that I didn't know the rule they were looking for. Bsed as best I could.
Anyway, second time I fucking passed and I still am completely baffled. I knew the law 25x better the first time but failed.
HOWEVER. Second time i did some work with an essay tutor who explained how bar is graded. Was real fucking eye opening. Apparently bar is big on facts and law but not common sense. So bar examiners are looking for you to apply common sense. I would essentially say since rule is X, and burglar 1 did this, and burglar 2 did this they are guilty of x. What they want is that plus, shit like this "since normal people don't enter through open windows in a garage of someone's house in the middle night unless they are trying to steal, burglar 1 was likely trying to steal, therefore he is guilty of burglary.
So the thing i took away is lay shit out like a math problem, show even the no shit steps. |

Most essay graders are on your side and want to help you (a few states excluded). For some reason the bar makes people not want to be clear and break it down simply like they would in any other situation.
Also, all the structuring advice notwithstanding, it's also still a total point grab. In the Barbri essays books they have grading sheet breakdowns where you see the point totals for each little thing in the essay. It's really worth looking at those carefully. |

My schedule was go to barbri lecture and take notes (no internet this was key), get out around 1230, go to gym (bar summer I was in the best shape of my life) go home and start getting my buzz on. Usually put in an hour or two more a day, though many days I did nothing after lecture even in July. I did maybe a week of 8-10 hour days at the end (but this includes posting). All told I read through each conviser once, looked through lecture notes once, 20-30 essays and around 500 mbe.
