In many ways, I think it's Kubrick's best film, at least post-2001. Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket are all great, but I don't think any of them reach the level of mastery on display in EWS.

I think that Barry Lyndon is in some sense the most refined version of Kubrick's sterile, inhuman/inhumane aesthetic, and I appreciate it as such.

From a purely "art" standpoint, I think the more impressionistic nature of The Shining is better than EWS.

I saw EWS in the theater with about 15-20 ppl. It was the late show and I forgot my glasses so I had to sit way down front to see. When it ended I thought it was a bit boring but overall pretty interesting. when I got up and turned to go to the exits I was the only person in the theater.
