it is its own little slice of hell. philly is the fucking worst city on the eastern seaboard by far. closest approximation is baltimore or trenton, but i'd rather spend time there than philly.

to quote the adage: In the contest, the 1st prize winner got a week in Philadelphia. 2nd prize: two weeks in philadelphia.

Fuck Philadelphia.

Agree 100%. Baltimore is really fucking bad, but Philly is Baltimore on a larger scale. Even the white people are insufferable. They look down on the rest of PA, but they're all knuckle-dragging mouth breathers who only talk about sports with their horrendous accents. JFC I hate Philly.

I've been there a few times. It has the same shit other larger cities have, but you just have this overwhelming feeling that you'd rather be watching a movie in your hotel room than dealing with the people and being out.

I've been able to go out and have fun in some real shit cities, but I just never took to Philly. I honestly can't put my finger on it.

It's the people. The city is full of uptight quaker faggots, prole guidos and out of control niggers. Pennsylvania in general just has a horrible mix of people.

I just moved here from a rural part of new England and fucking love it. Lots of good restaurants, cheap cost of living, extremely walkable, better art museums than boston. Hate the city tax and all the bums.

been here for two weeks and don't mind it. the city center is very walkable and there are some decent restaurants and cafes. i'm not sure i'd want to live here but pockets of it are liveable.

I don't know why you consider DC and NYC to be grouped together.

I am from Chicago, and Philadelphia and the outer boroughs of New York are the two places that remind me most of home.

Sup. Philly masterman here.

Center City Philly is very good. I would define this area as 30th Street-Front Street going west-east, and Spring Garden to South Street going North-South. The exception to this would be the southwest pocket, south of Market and west of Broad, but it's all residential there so you'd have no reason to go there anyway.

Best neighborhoods are Society Hill, Rittenhouse Square, and Washington Square. Northern Liberties is where the gentrification is happening and there's a lot of young people there. Very hipsterish vibe. North of Northern Liberties, ie Fishtown and Kensington, are pretty shitty though.

Old City is where all the school trips go. As far as touristy stuff it's pretty tame and you can knock it out in a day. Ben Franklin Boulevard has much nicer tourist stuff, like the Franklin Institute, Love Park, and the Art Museum.

They have tried to reinvigorate Old City but the results have been mixed. There's a lot of turnover in the shops/restaurants but still some pretty good ones. Most of the action is going to be around Rittenhouse or Northern Liberties. Manayunk is where college kids go after graduation to keep partying.

As far as suburbs, the best are going to be in a small pocket west of the city on the mainline. The heart of the main line in my opinion is between Ardmore and Radnor. That said there are plenty of other nice suburbs, for example Jenkintown and Huntingdon Valley north of the city and Swarthmore to the southwest.

I'm confused by you suggesting "south of market and west of broad" is the part of center city you would steer clear from. That's Rittenhouse Square... literally the best neighborhood in the city. Spring Garden to South is basically all nice now, except maybe the opposite corner -- east of broad (including broad itself) and north of market over to Chinatown.

I mean I literally said in my OP that Rittenhouse is one of the best neighborhoods. Yeah it's technically south of market and west of broad but it is like a quarter mile south and west.

A very small portion of it is decent. You can have fun, get good food, have a fun night out. But even that part is dirty and filled with trash. The rest of Philly is an unsafe dangerous dump. It really just has nothing going for it. The people are ice cold.
