My so called life was the realistic east coast version of 90210. not saying thats better or worse, but its definately uglier.

7th Heaven - never watched it so can't comment

The Tom Green Show - no

Beavis & Butthead - didn't really capture the totality of the 90s, only a small sliver of the culture

Fresh Prince - too black to really capture the totality of the 90s

My So Called Life - didn't really capture the totality of the 90s, only a small sliver of the culture

Home Improvement - decent choice, though I think dramas capture a zeitgeist better than comedies

Family Matters -- too black to really capture the totality of the 90s

So the totality of the '90s is captured by a show about extremely wealthy white teenagers?

go rewatch it breh. many episodes about different people.

and don't forget, the show was originally about kids from Minneapolis as fish out of water.

finally, the show was long enough to really span not only the 80s hangover, but also the late 90s into the early 2000s. Culturally, it got the 90s, which changed over the course of the decade.

I think you make a good point that 90210 literally spanned the entire 90s. I don't agree though that it's more '90s than the other shows i listed. I'd argue that my so called life is a far more realistic depiction of teenage life in the 90s even if it's just a mid-90s snapshot.

I also don't think you are right to dismiss shows just because the cast is black. Rarely were the themes in the show exclusively for black audiences. And for Fresh Prince, the emergence of hip hop culture was huge in the 90s. Was there even 1 black character on 90210?
