1969-1972: Build largest rocket world had ever seen, launch 3 men into lunar orbit, have one part of vehicle separate and land on lunar surface, 2 men walk around on moon, craft on lunar surface launches into lunar orbit with 2 men aboard, mates up with 3rd guy who had remained in orbit, then they all fly back to earth safely. Done 6 times.

2014: Routine launch to LOE explodes seconds into flight.

2014: Sub-orbital spacecraft crashes and kills a pilot.

The Nixon administration is responsible for the stagnation and lack of ambition in the manned exploration agenda over the subsequent decades; they witnessed the triumphs of the Apollo program but were in no way responsible for them. He and his advisers lacked the courage and foresight to push forward.

The job had been done, brother. Let us be realistic – the American space program flourished when it did not of a thirst for knowledge, but of a desire to demonstrate technological dominance amidst the Cold War. Once man stepped on the moon, we achieved perhaps the most significant accomplishment in manned space exploration possible without further major technological advancements. Even setting aside the costs and time required for such developments, the Soviets had begun their decline before the United States had a chance to consider the possibilities with any sense of earnestness.

Without the urgency brought by the threat of global conflict, NASA is little more than a government-funded research venture on par with other scientific programs, excepting projects of interest to the military (granted, of which there are many).

I don’t mean to suggest that the state should or should not be more interested in the space program – but, rather, that the blame for its decline does not fall on one individual or regime. JFK would have similarly allowed it to flounder were it not for the fact that political necessity required that he do otherwise. Absent political urgency, space exploration – as with any scientific research of potential interest to the state – is left to the wayside by the government – as it has been by every regime since JFK.

As an aside, it will be interesting to observe whether the rise of China reignites the state’s interest in spaceflight. Global political tension is of course not desirable in itself, but, as in any market, monopolies on international power discourage advancements otherwise wrought by competition. In an era in which mutually-assured destruction perhaps shields us from the dangers of total war amongst global powers, we may be in a position to reap the technological and cultural benefits of international rivalry while shielded from the existential threat of global annihilation. State-sponsored scientific research has been lacking since the decline of the US’s last serious geopolitical rival. Perhaps it will be revived with the emergence of new competition.

Subject: TBF

TBF they had accidents all the time. But pilots back then had insane courage.

“In time, the Navy would compile statistics showing that for a career Navy pilot, i.e., one who intended to keep flying for twenty years... there was a 23 percent probability that he would die in an aircraft accident. This did not even include combat deaths, since the military did not classify death in combat as accidental.”

our history now reads plausibly whether we consider time to flow forward or backward

for example: one could credibly believe that great men founded a nation by sailing to the distant shores of america, braved attacks by native americans, committed the original sin of slavery, which was later corrected through a tumultuous period culminating in the landing of a man on the moon, after which society steadily declined through the dissolution of culture until rockets fell into disrepair and periodically exploded just trying to reach the upper atmosphere

however: one could also credibly believe the reverse, which is that the early prototypes of a corporate spaceship company experienced early failures, but laid the foundations for a journey to the moon; despite these technological achievements, the cultural tumult of the era caused egregious measures to be put into law such as segregation, ultimately devolving into slavery, after which america fell into ruins and the survivors then fled indians and sailed for the U.K.

Ignoring the fact we don't have a rocket or capsule or lander or spacesuits available for the mission, and the fact only SpaceX, after years of effort, has only recently gotten propulsive landing down fairly reliably...we still can't figure out basic shit like having proper radiation shielding within mass requirements (despite having it figured out in the 60's). This problem alone is enough to prevent men from going beyond low earth orbit.
