Good question. I don't know, because my cell phone was off. It was for emergency use only (and who knows if it would even work) and I did have an extra battery.

I had a short-wave radio in case I needed to radio the coast guard.

I have always found that it is the unexpected challenges that throw you off course.

The paddling? I knew it would be hard. I didn't do any training at all, and am not even sure when was the last time before this adventure that I was in the water. Nonetheless I am a solid athlete and the paddling was not killing me. In the 4.5 hours I did not take a single break.

Most people in life don't even see the storm for what it is. They divert their course or turn back and are unsure why they ended up where they are. You see the storm brother. That's commendable.

Of course, now i am planning another attempt at this...

This time i will bring a life raft along for confidence. If there is a storm, I can always inflate it (C02, so it inflates automatically) and ride out the storm on the life raft.

Then, reboard the kayak when conditions improve.

I think it's lame. I once kayaked about 10miles out to an island off Marseille and then back. roundtrip maybe 4hrs. some sunburn, but especially my ankles got chapped because of being pressed against hot kayak. it's not really dangerous or scary, just boring after a while... I would not recommend a longer trip on a kayak.

A few years ago a couple bros attempted this. They were making good progress and celebrated reaching the halfway point by doing a roll. One of them, his kayak got fucked up when he rolled, and he hurt himself. They limped onward, dark and a storm were approaching, and the Chicago police/coast guard had to rescue them when they were not all that far from shore. Pissed everyone off.

Check out the February issue of Sea Kayaker magazine. It tells about a guy who did EVERYTHING wrong in an attempted crossing of Lake Michigan. A few highlights of his how-not-to-do-it fiasco:

1. He went alone.

2. He left at around 5 PM and paddled into the night, which disoriented him and made him seasick.

3. He paddled east to west, into the wind.

4. He left even though wind was predicted.

5. He brought a cell phone and expected it to work all the way across a 50 - 80 mile wide section of lake. He put it in a ziploc bag, so it got wet and stopped working anyway.

6. He did it in a rental kayak that crunched his feet and was too tippy for him to rest. He had never paddled it before.

7. He brought an EPIRB rescue device that didn't work.

8. No VHF radio.

9. He brought a leaky spray skirt.

10. When he tipped over in the middle of the lake, he was so numb and exhausted that he couldn't get back in the boat. He was adrift in the middle of Lake Michigan.

Lucky for him, the water was 70 degrees and he actually wore a wet suit, the one smart thing he did. He was rescued by a ship who he thought was answering his EPIRB. In fact, it was dumb luck. Nobody heard his distress signal. It was a miracle that this guy survived.
