In a cinematic universe built on a smorgasbord of superpowered beings, the inexplicable survival of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, during the final upstate NY battle of “Avengers: Endgame” stands out as an absurd nugget that is hard to swallow. How does a character with no superpowers, clad in a tactical suit and armed with bow and arrow, manage to survive?
First, let’s consider the battle itself. We are talking about an epic showdown involving cosmic tyrants and their entire armies, all endowed with powers and weapons that can obliterate entire planets. In the midst of this chaos, there’s Clint Barton, a mere mortal, sprinting down field with the gauntlet—which is infinitesimally powerful and attracting every bad guy in sight—miraculously dodging lethal blows as if he's wearing an invisibility cloak.
The sight of him weaving through the battlefield with ease, clutching the gauntlet like a football, is ludicrous and an insult to the audience’s intelligence.
Even worse, it undermines the incredible stakes of Endgame and belittles the sacrifices of Iron Man and Black Widow. Instead of an ending befitting these legendary characters, we got a literal running scene with Sprint Barton that felt more like the ending of a slapdash relay race.
In conclusion, Hawkeye’s survival in “Avengers: Endgame” was a glaring writing misstep that diminished a masterpiece and the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
