I'm assuming from the premise of your question that you do not plan to stay in Biglaw long-term. The average person stays for 3-4 years, so you'd be cutting out as very valuable 5-6 year associate rather than a less valuable 3-4 year.

Date: June 14th, 2015 12:38 PM Author: Lake Forum Legal Warrant cr, but I wonder if you don't get a clerkship bonus if you start as a first-year also you're definitely behind the ball as a 3d year unless you're a fucking alpha. 3d years have reputations with partners, occasionally with clients, can navigate well, etc. You're basically like a 1st year who knows a judge really well. |

But, I do understand that asking for a demotion is a terrible first impression. If I enter as a second year, I do still receive a bonus. I think perhaps that will be the best bet.

I've never heard of ASKING to get bumped down, only getting bumped down if prior experience wasn't relevant or if there were performance issues once at firm. You've already missed out on two years of prime earning potential, why put yourself farther down on the payscale/partnership track (even if you really don't think you'll make partner, you never know).
