I wrote a shitty note about some obscure public policy issue in a secondary journal. Five years later I got an email about it from a reporter asking me for an opinion. I deleted it.

This is flame. I hated being on law review, but it is a legitimate bump for job prospects. It was still referenced at the interview to my in-house job, even though by then I was like seven years removed from it. You don't learn anything, but its real value is that it proves you're willing to do menial shitwork just because you're supposed to, which is ultimately what the legal profession is all about.

if a 1L asked me what to do, and they definitely didn't care about biglaw work, i would absolutely advise them to avoid lr and secondaries. more free time to concentrate on classes. i did LR my 2L year but quit spring semester (effective the next edition) because it was absolutely pointless, menial work and wasn't going to help me reach my goals.

that's a bold move. Good that it worked out. I sloughed through it and enjoyed writing my note which wasn't accepted, but I knew it wouldn't but I now am basically an expert on this one random area of legal history, etc.

you're given a cite and you follow the cite to see if the original says what the article author is articulating.

do 50 of those a week.

it does: cool, no problem

if it doesn't: you look for the right pincite. maybe it's a few lines lower. if there isn't one, and the article author is completely bullshitting . . . well then I'm not sure what.

And not just that-- suppose that the author cites a newspaper. Well, that cite includes what page in the newspaper the article was on. It's not enough to double-check the reference on Lexis. You have to go to the library and find the newspaper (real copy or, more likely, in microfilm) to confirm that Lexis has the correct page number. One time, Lexis claimed an article was on A4 of the NY Times when it fact it was on C4. I'll never forget the look on the editor in chief's face when we found the error. It was the sort of unbridled joy that can only be summoned by children on Christmas morning or, as here, with very specific strains of autism.

In addition to cite checking, there's also the dreaded "Find Authority." A professor made factual or legal assertion x, but didn't get around to citing anything for it. Well, guess who is on a scavenger hunt to find an answer? Sometimes it's NBD, but other times you're trying to find a law review acceptable authority for the proposition that "cops like to eat doughnuts is a pop culture trope."

But yeah its funny how people get super into fixing pin cites or whatever and think they're smart.
