Their massive size and softness of the wood meant that they would splinter on impact. Loggers tried digging huge trenches and filling them with water or branches to soften the fall but it wasnt worth the labor involved. So they stopped logging them and went for spruce instead

I guess designating certain redwood forests as National Monuments, and others as protected in National Parks had nothing to do with it.

Uhh, yea. Long after most of the trees were cut down, due to logging. I guess they didn't give a fuck about splintering afterall:

Before the logging industry came to California, there were an estimated 2 million acres (8,000 km2) of old growth forest containing redwoods growing in a narrow strip along the coast.

By the early 20th century, most of these forests had been cut down. Just north of the San Francisco Bay, one valley named Redwood Canyon remained uncut, mainly due to its relative inaccessibility.

This was noticed by U.S. Congressman William Kent. He and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, purchased 611 acres (247 ha) of land from the Tamalpais Land and Water Company for $45,000 with the goal of protecting the redwoods and the mountain above them.

In 1907, a water company in nearby Sausalito planned to dam Redwood Creek, thereby flooding the valley. When Kent objected to the plan, the water company threatened to use eminent domain and took him to court to attempt to force the project to move ahead. Kent sidestepped the water company's plot by donating 295 acres (119 ha) of the redwood forest to the federal government, thus bypassing the local courts.

On January 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument, the first to be created from land donated by a private individual.

Just do 2 million acres of logging, and then when a few thousand acres of inaccessible land is left, that happens to become protected national forest, declare Redwoods SPS for "splintering upon impact."

There is nothing to explain bro. HISTORY tells us the Giant Redwoods in the American West were logged to near EXTINCTION. There are, quite literally, a few hundred acres left, out of MILLIONS of acres that existed before the Redwoods were logged.

You're done here bro, just throw in the towel.

I suspect flame because in fact the vast majority of redwood territory was logged prior to the national park being formed.

The biggest coastal ones were never logged. Further inland where wildfires would keep size down they could be logged.

Due to their weight and brittleness, trees would often shatter when they hit the ground, wasting much of the wood. Loggers attempted to cushion the impact by digging trenches and filling them with branches. Still, as little as 50% of the timber is estimated to have made it from groves to the mill. The wood was used mainly for shingles and fence posts, or even for matchsticks.

Wouldn't the wood shattering be an awesome thing? You could haul off the wood more easily and quickly.

God damn, I wish every tree I've cut down turned into firewood when it hit the ground.
