Only flown first by getting bumped from business - not worth paying anything for it. Even if you're a lush on a day flight, you'd be hard pressed to drink more than $200 more retail than the biz class offerings. Business can be worth it if overnight.

I've only done it when booking with miles. Depending on the airline and their redemption structure, it's sometimes only a negligible difference between business and first. I also remember one flight I took where business was actually fewer miles than coach.

It's not worth paying for, though.

Doesn't seem worth it even with miles, other than just to do it once. RT F North America to Asia is about 100k-115k more miles than economy, which, even at the conservative valuation of 1 cent per mile, is an extra $1000-$1150. I've never flown F, but I can't imagine it's more comfortable than sitting in my living room and I wouldn't pay $1000 to sit in my living room rather than in economy, and I've flown to SEA about 10 times on all kinds of airlines usually total of about 24 hrs travel time. Yea $1000 in miles seems worth it compared to the sticker price of F, but I wouldn't even waste the miles more than once just to try it unless I made like $500k+ a year.

before the devaluations it was worth it. For example roundtrip NY to Asia with United miles in Biz was 120k, but F was 140k. Who wouldn't drop a measly 10k miles each way for the bump

I fly business all the time and I've been upgraded to first a couple times. I never pay for it myself though.

I fly about 75k miles per year domestic, everything from pure shit regional jets to upgrades on longer flights. They are all varying levels of SHIT. I will never fly international unless in biz or first. Not like I'm doing it very often, might as well enjoy it. We did British Airways first one time and it was legit comfortable, not just "airplane comfortable"

can't normally sleep on planes, so being able to lie down is clutch

A true lie flat bed, as in horizontal to the floor and not merely angled flat, is great.

Yes, in my experience. Some biz has true lie flat. The way some airlines try to make angled flat sound like true lie flat is annoying.

Most carriers have ditched angled lie flats in biz. All the LH planes besides the 748 have them sadly, and some of the AF planes (but they are phasing in new seats). UA and DL are all lie flat, American still trots out the awful 757's with angled seats longhaul though.

First class on AA, BA, Cathay. Biz on United, Thai Airways, Air Canada. All points redemptions. Cathay was best hands down but I was sick as fuckk after a long vacation and felt like death. Still downed two blue label scotches, which didn't help my situation.

a few times as random upgrades/make goods. Best was when Quantas legitimately fucked up my reservation and flew me first class to Australia as a make good. I felt like a normal human being upon landing instead of depleted and drained. Never paid for it though. Ex-wife demanded first class for our honeymoon to Bali, I dingfagged her. Probably a sign of things to come.

Fly biz for work on long-haul international and paid to upgrade once on Cathay.

It's nice but the real step-up is between coach and lie-flat biz. Once you can stretch out and nap on a long flight nothing else really matters. Even top-tier airplane food and drink is nothing spectacular. I don't need a bigger screen to watch crappy movies on. Just give me some valium and a mini bed and I'm set.

i agree with this but there still is a definite upgrade depending on the airline.

lufthansa has its own 1st class terminals. they return your rental car for you, private security, and escort you through customs and onto the plane after boarding is nearly complete.

okay prole question here.

So biz is different from first class, right? There's coach, then business, then first class?

I've only done coach, ever.

It depends on the airline and plane. Sometimes its just coach / business and sometimes those airlines have multiple tiers of business. The standard configuration would be coach, then business, then first.

That's not standard. Very few airlines still offer first class, and the ones that do, don't offer it on every int'l route. For example, none of the Cathay flights from HKG to Sydney have an F cabin.

most airlines are moving to two cabin (coach and biz only). many international airlines still have three cabins though (coach, biz and first). on a lot of airlines the difference between biz and first is negligible.

Some have four - first, business, premium economy and economy.

If economy is 10/100, then premium economy is like 50/100, business is 80/100 and first is 100/100.

Some airlines only have coach and business, no first. Others have coach, business and first, and still others work in "premium economy" in between coach and business, with or without also having a first class cabin.

A few times. Not so much anymore, too much $ to book outright and too much pain in the ass and miles to book award flights.

What really to me is having wifi and a power outlet.

On the other hand, I still use Uber X rather than Uber, and I think that is much more luxury for the dollar than business class.

Off the top of my head: CA (Air China), NH (ANA), OZ (Asiana), CX (Cathay), SQ (Singapore), TG (Thai), AF (Air France), BA (British), LH (Lufthansa), LX (Swiss), QR (Qatar), AA (American), UA (United), Q (Qantas)F, SA* (South African)

* for SA, because they had retired all of the 747 that had F, but apparently pulled one out of mothballs for a CPT-JNB flight I was on. The plane had the old-F seats, but we still got J service.

For upcoming NYE trip:

AI Biz EWR-BOM-GOI

QR Biz GOI-DOH-DAR

PW Econ DAR-ZNZ-DAR

SA Econ DAR-JNB

CX Biz JNB-HKG

CX Biz HKG-MNL

2P Econ MNL-MPH-MNL

SQ F MNL-SIN-ICN-SFO

B6 Biz SFO-JFK
