Date: March 20th, 2018 11:52 AM Author: bearded french institution chad Before I went to law school I worked in the sort of drab, Kafkaesque corporate cubicle farm that you'd think would plunge most people into an existential crisis: what am I doing with my life? Am I really going to come here for the next 30 years, listen to my fat coworkers talk about their cats, and plug away for a living wage that will keep me enslaved?
It was depressing but I handled it by rationalizing that it was temporary until law school (though my choice to go to law school was, in hindsight, a laughable escape plan).
But you know what? Most of these cube monkeys weren't depressed. I palled around with a few other young misanthropes who wanted to escape, but the older Gen X crowd were lifers and proud of it. They were mostly fat Gen X women and had simple lives. They were so proud of their "work," too. They'd come in at 8:30 AM (LJL) and plug away putting numbers on spreadsheets until noon. Then they'd eat a cold sandwich in the windowless breakroom or in their little cubes. They'd go back to spread sheeting until 5:00 when they promptly peeled out. They were so proud of their spreadsheets and their occasional work commendations and getting assignments turned in and hanging photos in their little cubes. This was all there was to them. Me? I wanted to blow my brains out.
