How many jobs are just completely and totally pointless? 95 percent? The whole concept of a good "work ethic" is flame. I just don't understand why more people don't realize this. Women seems especially enthusiastic about their pointless jobs.

Maybe in some cultures.

the worst part about this mentality is what it's done to the elite
previously people accepted that work was work. when they MAED it, they gave back to society. raise your fucking hand if your college had a building named after a rockefeller (and this was back when colleges actually used money to build shit that matters, not some gay technogym 5000 with 16 squash courts and a personal sybian room). now because we're all about this weird work cult mentality, they pretty much bury their money under rocks
sure people like gates try to do their part, but it's the tons of people in the middle who have a couple billion that just hoard that shit. it's certainly their right, but it says something ultimately tragic about society.

the flourishing of the INDUSTRIAL ERA was met with some sense of ultimate responsibility by the new ultra rich (e.g. gospel of wealth), when the class first took off. before then there were like 5 pompeys for every country. now there are a lot more, but we've really backslid over the course of the century in terms of philanthropy.
and when there is a donation, great, you donated 200 million for a new business school building at a school which already has a top program. what the fuck, asshole?
and as a STEMmo, it's not just research and whatnot you could organize and advance. think of the arts movement in cities in the early 20th century.

Before I went to law school I worked in the sort of drab, Kafkaesque corporate cubicle farm that you'd think would plunge most people into an existential crisis: what am I doing with my life? Am I really going to come here for the next 30 years, listen to my fat coworkers talk about their cats, and plug away for a living wage that will keep me enslaved?
It was depressing but I handled it by rationalizing that it was temporary until law school (though my choice to go to law school was, in hindsight, a laughable escape plan).
But you know what? Most of these cube monkeys weren't depressed. I palled around with a few other young misanthropes who wanted to escape, but the older Gen X crowd were lifers and proud of it. They were mostly fat Gen X women and had simple lives. They were so proud of their "work," too. They'd come in at 8:30 AM (LJL) and plug away putting numbers on spreadsheets until noon. Then they'd eat a cold sandwich in the windowless breakroom or in their little cubes. They'd go back to spread sheeting until 5:00 when they promptly peeled out. They were so proud of their spreadsheets and their occasional work commendations and getting assignments turned in and hanging photos in their little cubes. This was all there was to them. Me? I wanted to blow my brains out.
