Here's a version of "Wolves," a track Kanye has previewed a couple times, that he's said will be the first track on the new album.

I took a few snippets of the track and spliced them together to create (potentially outdated) full length version of it.

It features Sia and Vic Mensa.

Stream and download it here: http://www14.zippyshare.com/v/jJUaexJU/file.html

(SoundCloud has repeatedly taken it down, so my apologies for using zippy.)

I did at first too.

The sound palette he used in Cruel Summer and Yeezus is intentionally grating and "difficult" to get into. He was pretty unabashed about it; he wanted to do something that isn't radio-friendly bangers. He's been on the record about how he wanted to do something avant-garde. He even gloated to one of his longtime collaborators and producers about the fact Yeezus doesn't have a single snare beat until track six.

But over time, in my experience, the harshness lost its potency and thus my aversion to it, and that enabled me to "access" the "hidden gems" within Yeezus.

I had a lot of friends tell me I was crazy for praising the album so much, and I recommended starting at "Hold My Liquor" and listening through and ending with "New Slaves" in order to get into it. He front-loaded the album with the harshest four songs, so I think it's a credited strategy to avoid them initially and see if you can't come to enjoy them over time.

I've given yeezus plenty of chances--music is subjective and I just don't like that album. 808s gets more play in my car

While I concede that Yeezus is significantly harsher, the two albums have the same DNA. See, e.g., the movement away from MBDTF's maximalism in favor of stripped down minimal production and the abundant use of dancehall samples for tracks' hooks.

What's starkly distinct between the two is the prominence of drums/beats; Cruel Summer thumps while Yeezus almost entirely avoids drums—both bass and snares. "Bound 2" is a good example: sure, it was a single, but the track totally lacks a drum beat, which all but assured it wouldn't be a radio hit.

I see where you're coming from, though, and you're certainly not alone. I wanted to turn off the album a minute into "On Sight" the first time I put the album on, but now I think "On Sight" is one of the best things he's ever done.

Sure man, if that's what you want to think — go right ahead. Nothing I'm going to write will change your mind.

But if knew much/anything about the processing behind Yeezus, it'd be abundantly clear that Kanye wasn't aping anyone. He showed up to Shangri La with something like five hours of music and explicitly told Rubin to avoid adding more sounds and rather wanted him to take as many out as possible.

So if there's anyone you insist on hanging the "aping Death Grips' sound" noose around, it'd be Rubin.

Posted another new free track this morning: "No More Parties In LA" featuring Kendrick Lamar.

Stream it here: https://soundcloud.com/kanyewest/nomorepartiesinla

Definitely worth checking out Ye's lyrics:

Friday night tryna make it into the city

Breakneck speeds, passenger seat something pretty

Thinking back to how I got here in the first place

Second class bitches wouldn't let me on first base

A backpack nigga with luxury taste buds

And the Louis Vuitton store, got all of my pay stubs

Got pussy from beats I did for niggas more famous

When did I become A list? I wasn't even on a list

Strippers get invited to where they only get hired

When I get on my Steve Jobs, somebody gon' get fired

I was uninspired since Lauryn Hill retired

And 3 Stacks, man, you preach it to the choir

Any rumor you heard about me was true and legendary

I done got Lewinsky and paid secretaries

For all my niggas with babies by bitches

That use their kids as meal tickets

Not knowing the disconnect from the father

The next generation will be the real victims

I can't fault 'em really

I remember Amber told my boy no matter what happens she ain't going back to Philly

Back to our regularly scheduled programmin'

Of week content of slow jammin'

But don't worry, this one's so jammin'

You know it, L.A., it's so jammin'

I be thinkin' every day

Mulholland Drive, need to put up some god damn barricades

I be paranoid every time

The pressure, the problem ain't I be drivin'

The problem is I be textin'

My psychiatrist got kids that I inspired

First song they played for me was 'bout their friend that just died

Textin' and drivin' down Mulholland Drive

That's why I'd rather take the 405

I be worried 'bout my daughter, I be worried 'bout Kim

But Saint is baby Ye, I ain't worried 'bout him

I had my life threatened by best friends who had selfish intents

What I'm supposed to do?

Ride around with a bulletproof car and some tints?

Every agent I know know I hate agents

I'm too black, I'm too vocal, I'm too flagrant

Something smellin' like shit, that's the new fragrance

It's just me, I do it my way, bitch

Some days I'm in my Yeezys, some days I'm in my Vans

If I knew y'all made plans I wouldn't have popped the Xans

I know some fans who thought I wouldn't rap like this again

But the writer's block is over, emcees cancel your plans

I'm 38 years old, a 8 year old with rich nigga problems

Tell my wife that I hate the road so I ain't never drivin'

It took 6 months to take the Maybach all matted out

And my assistant crashed as soon as they backed it out

Got damn, got up of fade, I might slam

Pink fur, got Nori dressing like Cam, thank God for me

Whole family gettin' money, thank God for E!

I love rockin' jewelry, a whole neck full

Bitches say he funny and disrespectful

I feel like Pablo when I'm workin' on my shoes

I feel like Pablo when I see me on the news

I feel like Pablo when I'm workin' on my house

Tell 'em party's in here, we don't need to go out

We need the turbo thots, high speed, turbo thots

Drop-dro-dro-dro-drop it like Robocop

She brace herself and hold my stomach, good dick'll do that

She keep pushin' me back, good dick'll do that

She push me back when the dick go too deep

This good dick'll put your ass to sleep

Get money, money, money, money

Big, big money, money, money, money

And as far as real friends, tell my cousins I love 'em

Even the one that stole the laptop, you dirty motherfucker

Best lines imo:

I be worried 'bout my daughter, I be worried 'bout Kim / But Saint is baby Ye, I ain't worried 'bout him

I know some fans who thought I wouldn't rap like this again / But the writer's block is over, emcees cancel your plans

Pink fur, got Nori dressing like Cam [reference: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CZAdHQ6W8AApx11.png:large ]

And again referencing the cousin who stole his laptop (which he rapped about in "Real Friends"):

And as far as real friends, tell my cousins I love 'em / Even the one that stole the laptop, you dirty motherfucker

I love it. I think it's incredible.

I can't even begin to imagine how difficult writing those lyrics was. Baring your soul to the entire world is inconceivable to me.

Of all the tracks he's officially released since Yeezus, "Only One" stands head-and-shoulders above the others, imo.

What do you think about it?

No, I don't believe so. McCartney co-produced the track and, I believe, plays the piano.

But Rick Rubin certainly seems to indicate the lyrics were all Kanye:

>> Kanye is a combination of careful and spontaneous. He’ll find a theme he likes quickly, and then live with that for a while, not necessarily filling in all the words until later. At the end, he’ll fill in all the gaps.

He was upset at one point when I said that he wrote the lyrics quickly. He’s right — they percolate for a long time, he gets the phrasing into his brain, lives with it, and then lines come up. It definitely starts from this very spontaneous thing.

On Only One, a lot of those lyrics came out free-form, ad-libs. The song is essentially live, written in the moment. Some of the words were later improved, but most of it was stream of consciousness, just Kanye being in the moment. <<
