Wife and I are going to do both with our two 2-6 yr old kids.

I took the overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki once. What are your Q's? Also if you want to be uncomfortable the entire time, please read: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2004/05/a-sea-story/302940/

Just what type of cabin we should get for two adults and two kids and what, if anything, we should try to do.

The boat is still pretty TTT, none of the cabins are "nice" and it's a short crossing, so I'd say go with the cheapest. During summer the sun never dips below the horizon, it comes right down to the horizon somewhere between 2-4am an then goes back up. It's worth staying up and watching. I think a lot of people take these overnights just to gamble and booze.

Would you do it again?

Shit, I thought the sun went down for a few hours....that is going to be weird.

I meant, would you do it again if you hadn't before? Seems like a beautiful way to see the area, no? We will certainly fly back to Stockholm from St. Petersburg.

I suppose it's worth doing once, but really for so much of the journey it's close to dark outside and there's nothing to see.

By "light" I mean it's not fully night time dark on the water, it won't be like as bright as day the whole time. Last time I was in Stockholm in late June the sun would be back up by around 3am and it felt like it could be noon. It's weird walking out of a bar before last call and feeling like it could be midday.

Be glad you're not going in winter. I remember walking around Stockholm at like 330pm and wondering why all these kids were out at midnight since it was pitch black, then realizing it was mid-afternoon and they were on their way home from school. I didn't see the sun for like 10 days.

Great article. I suppose everyone feels like they would be one of the "driven" people who has what it takes to survive but obviously not.
